Silver Mountain Idaho is located near the town of Kellogg, Idaho is located in the Silver Valley of Shoshone County on a three mile square section along the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River. The city is easily accessible by Interstate 90 just 70 miles east of Spokane, Washington and 30 miles east of Coeur d’Alene.
The town was originally founded by Noah Kellogg when his donkey wandered away from the original trail and was found at a large outcropping of galena. From its beginning until the early 1980s when Bunker Hill Mines closed, Kellogg thrived as a mining and railroad community. The heritage is well documented in community museums honoring mining and railroads as well as the annual “Jackass Days Festival.” This small town of under 5000 stays true to its mining heritage which played a large part in the early development of Idaho.
When the mines closed, the leaders of Kellogg turned to recreation and vacation home sales as a new direction for commerce. The town built the largest aerial transportation (gondola) system in the United States. The abandoned railroad railbed is now a Green Belt walkway through the middle of the city attracting potential buyers interested in investing in green properties. Winter sports are abundant since the city is at the base of the Bitterroot Range which is famous for alpine and heli-skiing and ski resorts have long been popular. Cross-country skiing can be found in the nearby Coeur d’Alene National Forest and in the Bitterroot Range on the Idaho-Montana border. Chinook salmon and lake trout are also regional to the Panhandle.
