More than 8 million households, about 6% of the national total, are located in gated communities which include walls or other natural elements enclosing the development. About half of gated neighborhoods offer controlled access with electric gates, entry codes, key cards or security guards. Currently, gated communities are most numerous in large metropolitan and coastal areas of the United States, with the largest concentrations in Arizona, California, Florida, New York and Texas, where they represent one out of every three new residential developments. Gated neighborhoods in urban settings provide an oasis from the traffic, noise and congestion of the surrounding cityscape. More and more, developers are finding that homeowners are willing to spend more for the enhanced peace of mind from gated entrances and perimeter walls. Modern technology allows for greater levels of convenience and security within gated communities and includes cameras, electronic access control and monitored security systems.

Private, gated communities are no longer just for the wealthiest people. As this style of living has grown, communities have been built all across the country at a wide variety of price points ranging from a few amenities all the way to private clubs with gourmet dining rooms and championship golf courses.
