Surrounded by 800,000 acres of White Mountain National Forest, Mount Washington Resort offers breathtaking properties in an extraordinary planned community that takes advantage of all four seasons. Located in Coos County, New Hampshire, the county seat of Carroll has evolved into two separate village areas, Twin Mountain and Bretton Woods, which provide residents the security and closeness of small villages common throughout New Hampshire.

Close by, the famous Mount Washington Resort has been a stalwart in the community since Sir Thomas Wentworth was given a land grant in 1772 to establish with 82 others a “plantation” that would solidify the claim to the region by England. In 1832 the township of Bretton Woods was renamed Carroll in honor of New Hampshire’s signer of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll. At the beginning of the 20th century this quietly remote area began to take its place as a leading resort destination for residents of thriving New England cities. Joseph Stickney, owner of Mount Pleasant House which today is the Lodge at Mount Washington, hired famous architect Charles Gifford to design a hotel that when opened in 1902 would be state-of-the-art and possess the “wow” factor that draws visitors. Such famous inventors of the time as Thomas Edison who completed the electrical services for the hotel were instrumental in making the area a destination for those who demanded the epitome in luxury accommodations. When Stickney died his wife Carolyn inherited the hotel and while she remained, showed little interest in maintaining its majestic state although rumors persist that her spirit still roams the hotel. Not until World War II when President Roosevelt ordered the Hotel restored so it could be used for government summits did the area again become a destination. Finally in 1991, two local families purchased the hotel renovating it to its earlier grandeur and creating the year-round resort of Mount Washington. In 1997 the group acquired Bretton Woods Mountain Resort, Sports Club, existing residential areas and other parcels of the original land grant with the goal of unifying the community. The all inclusive resort’s vision would be to establish environmentally sustainable resort property for sale. To welcome the new millennium, Mount Washington Resort operated year-round for the first time providing amenities that rival any luxury property in America. The Mount Washington Resort, a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture, has since been named a national historical landmark.

Mount Washington has been developed amidst the Presidential Range of the White Mountains with magnificent views of the highest peaks in the Northeast including Mount Washington at 6,288ft. The Presidential Range forms a unique 12-mile long ridgeline with remarkable features above the tree line. The greatest contiguous alpine area in the US east of the Mississippi River with its fascinating landscape will mystify potential property investors. The land appears barren but low spruce, fir scrubs and varieties of alpine plants which bloom from mid-June to late July provide breathtaking views making the area a popular retirement community because of the emphasis on protecting the environment. Throughout the year, residents enjoy a variety of activities that satisfy the demands of true outdoorsmen. The community has developed the longest canopy tour in the Continental US which stretches through the White Mountains. The winter is the high season when the entire area comes alive with Alpine and Nordic skiing, sleigh rides through the vast forests, snowshoeing and animal tracking in the backwoods with residents ending their long days at the Resort spa. The ability to maintain the fragile balance between enjoying the resources of the area and maintaining the environmental integrity of the region has been achieved by all who have been instrumental in developing the areas. Large green spaces exist within planned communities, wildlife corridors exist to ensure that the animals of the region are protected and the use of recycled and energy efficient materials to build and develop localities has made Mount Washington a leader in environmentally sound development.
