the Sanctuary: Charlotte, North Carolina

Discover nature while living within an Audubon preservation at The Sanctuary

The Real Estate Home Guide is pleased to announce its association with The Sanctuary, Charlotte, North Carolina’s 1,300 acre nature reserve community. Thoughtfully set along 12,000 acre Lake Wylie, The Sanctuary’s private preserves and over seven miles of shoreline have become some of the most sought after property in the Southeast. Residents fashion their own personalized “family compound”, 2 to 13 acre estates which allow for up to five structures to be constructed. Select waterfront Private Preserves are still available.

The Sanctuary is strongly committed to environmental preservation- the community is one of the country’s few developments contained within a wildlife sanctuary. The homesites will remain mostly natural and many of the builders use ‘green building practices’ in constructing their homes. The Audubon International has awarded The Sanctuary its prestigious Three Diamond designation which indicates a superlative project based on protection of wildlife, water quality and native flora, green building practices and site design. “Rather than the more traditional approach to determine density and achieve it, we studied the natural characteristics of the land to find the ultimate building sites- those which truly fit the land,” explained H. Tom Webb III, senior V.P. for residential development.

The social centerpiece of the community is The Camp, with the Audubon Lodge, swimming pools, tennis courts, fitness room, kid’s room and playground, outdoor amphitheater and picnic areas. The community employs a full-time activities director for year-round events, nature hikes and much more. Additionally, over twenty miles of nature trails wander through the community’s wilderness parks and the lakefront boating center features kayaks and canoes for residents and guests to enjoy Lake Wylie. In 2006, Forbes magazine selected The Sanctuary for its top pick in “Where We Want To Live To Raise A Family.”
